In this section you will learn how to access the SMART FIRES data lake via Globus. Logging in to Globus is a process that varies depending on your institution. Once you are able to log in to Globus, you will need to communicate to the MSU Cyberinfrastructure (CI) team your interest to access the SMART FIRES data lake. Access to the data lake is by invite only. The following steps will take you through the process.

The term “data lake” in this document is synonymous with data storage via the MSU Blackmore system, and is also referred to as the “SMART FIRES Blackmore share” and, when on Globus, the “smart-fires” Collection.

Step 1. Log in to Globus

To log in to Globus, use one of the methods below. While you may also log in with existing credentials from Google, ORCID, or GithHub, those methods are not covered here. For more assistance with using multiple types of credentials in this step, see How to Log in and Transfer Files with Globus, step 1: “Log in with an existing identity.”

Log in to Globus with NetID:
If you have a NetID associated with MSU or UM, follow these steps:

  • Go to Globus.org.
  • Click the Log In button.
  • Under “Use your existing organizational login,” select “Montana State University – Bozeman” or “The University of Montana” Click Continue.
  • You will be redirected to the CILogon NetId login page for your institution. Enter your NetId credentials.
  • Complete Duo authentication when prompted.

Log in to Globus with Globus ID or Create a Globus ID:
If you do not have a NetID associated with MSU or UM, you can log in to Globus with an existing Globus ID, or create a new Globus ID.

Log in with an existing Globus ID:

Step 2. Inform the MSU CI Team and Accept the Invite

Once you are able to log in to Globus, follow these steps:

  • Inform the MSU Cyberinfrastructure Team that you would like access to the SMART FIRES data lake by sending an email to blackmore-support@montana.edu.
  • The team will send you an invitation via email to join the SMART FIRES group. Follow the link in the email to accept the invite.
  • If you missed the email or do not have access to the email address, log in to Globus again and go to the Groups tab on the left panel.
  • You will be able to view any pending invites there. Click Accept to join the group.

Step 3. Access the SMART FIRES data lake

Once you have accepted the SMART FIRES group invite from step 2, you will be able to access the SMART FIRES data lake, also known as the “smart-fires” Collection on Globus.

For more assistance with this step, see How to Log in and Transfer Files with Globus, steps 2 & 3: “The File Manager” and “Access a Collection”

  • Log in to Globus, if you have not already done so.
  • Go to the File Manager tab on the left panel.
  • In the Collection search box, type “smart-fires”.
  • This will take you to the “data” folder for the SMART FIRES share on Blackmore (i.e., the SMART FIRES data lake). From here you may browse to access each Thrust’s directory

Globus Personal Collection

Along with being able to transfer data between Blackmore and Tempest, Globus can be used to transfer files from Blackmore and Tempest to personal devices using a personal collection. A personal collection is a folder or set of folders that Globus has access to move data into and out of. This allows you to transfer files from your personal device the same exact way as between Tempest and Blackmore, including using the Globus Software Development Kit (SDK) and Command Line Interface (CLI).

Downloading Globus Connect Personal

In order to create a personal collection, you must install Globus Connect Personal by doing the following:

  1. Navigate to Globus Connect Personal and select the operating system of your choosing.
  2. Follow the instructions on the following page for the installation to install Globus Connect Personal and create a personal endpoint.
  3. If you do not want Globus to have access to the metadata for your entire home drive, consider creating a top-level data sharing folder. This can be set up in the Preferences/Access menu of the Globus options after installation.

Joining MSU Globus Plus Group

Another benefit of personal collections and Globus Connect Personal is the ability to transfer between personal endpoints. In order to accomplish this, you must join the MSU Globus Plus Group. To do this, do the following:

After you’ve requested to join the group, you will have to wait for your request to be approved shortly after by an administrator. Once this is complete, you will be able to transfer between personal endpoints along with the other benefits of the Globus Plus subscription, including transferring to and from a OneDrive location.

Log into Globus and select the ‘Groups’ tab on the left side of the screen.

Search ‘Montana State University Standard’ on the search bar at the top. Note: If nothing shows up, make sure to deselect the ‘My Groups’ option on the screen.

Click on the ‘Join Group’ button next to the ‘Montana State University Standard’ group.
