Data Lake – File Management

The data lake CAN store the following:

RESTRICTED

All data for which release or modification without authorization could have an adverse effect on the operations, assets, or reputation of the University. Examples include employee and student ID numbers (GID / MSU ID), course evaluations, financial transactions that do not include confidential data, contracts, planning documents, and student education records as defined by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). All files are assumed to be ‘restricted’ unless otherwise classified as public’ or ‘confidential’.

PUBLIC

All data that is not restricted by one of the other classifications and may be released to the general public in a controlled manner and per procedures, such as information designated as “Directory Information” under University policy pertaining to FERPA. Other examples include course schedules, public web pages, campus maps, policy documents, faculty publications, job opening announcements, and press releases.

The data lake CAN NOT store the following data type:

CONFIDENTIAL

All data which, if released in an uncontrolled fashion, could have substantial fiscal or legal impacts on the University. Examples include social security numbers, financial account numbers, driver’s license numbers, health insurance policy ID numbers, protected health information (PHI), passport visa numbers, and export-controlled information under U.S. laws.

More information on allowed data types can be found on the MSU Data Standards & Procedures website. If in doubt, please each out to your university’s Office of Research Compliance.

SMART FIRES data is contained within Blackmore collection on Globus.

  •    ‘data’ folder contains high level folders for AIML, FSS, and SOS groups.
  •    ‘spee’ folder requires special access
  •    Please put your data within your thrust and name appropriately
    • (ex a user in the Whitaker lab on the AIML team, would put their data in AIML/Whitaker/)

Currently all groups have access to other groups folders. However, not all groups have access to the spee folder. If a different permissions structure is requested it can be accommodated.

VIDEO: ENDPOINT SYNCHRONIZATION

Along with doing basic transfers of files, Globus can be used to synchronize two different endpoints. However, this synchronization method is not a bidirectional synchronization and instead causes the destination folder to look like the source folder. A two-way synchronization can be accomplished by doing two individual synchronizations.

Synchronization Process

  1. Open Globus and select the two collections that you wish to begin a sync between.
  2. Select the target folder that you want to sync at the destination.
  3. Click the ‘Transfer & Timer Options’ dropdown and select the first ‘sync’ option. You can also select some of the other options if they match with what you want to accomplish, but only the ‘sync’ option is necessary.
  4. Set the scheduling for the synchronization. The start time can be chosen at any point after the current moment. Next select the repeat interval of days, hours, minutes, or just a one-time sync. Finally select the ‘end’ method of synchronization.

Currently you must log in every 30 days in order to keep a synchronization that lasts longer than 30 days going.
